#27 We ARE the Turtles...
I really enjoyed making this jewelryeidoscope. I had pictured, for quite awhile, an image of a tower with turtles climbing...aspiring for the stars.
I couldn't get the image out of my head and so, I began to create
"We ARE the Turtles"... I used Uroboros granite and herringbone ripple
coffee and cream textured art glasses in sections as the balanced
portions of the 'tower' along with beautiful pieces of
CBS Cyan/Pink Herringbone Ripple Dichroic for waves....
With the finished piece measuring almost a foot in height, I knew I would need a
good 'handle' to pick it up with. I went to my local hardware store and picked up several different styles of cabinet pulls and handles. I finally settled on two of the same style and made one the handle, and the other for a handy thumb rest.
Then I began to place the vintage turtle jewelry...
As the piece was created, it began to emerge as a metaphor
for 'all of us'. A perfect vehicle to make a statement...
That we are ALL the same and ALL beautiful in
our own special way.

Simply put...a metaphor for 'mankind' being the turtles.
We come in many different colors and styles and yet,
we are all the same. Aren't we beautiful?
You know...It's finally an appropriate time to discuss race and
prejudice and why it is so wrong in the 21st century.
I believe the problem is that our perception of ourselves is
still too narrow. We need to learn to view ourselves
as 'one' people of an entire 'world'.
Perhaps if we begin to view ourselves as different types
of flavored coffee then we could begin to understand
that we are all the same...
we just each have a different flavor and mix.
Some of us are french vanilla and
some of us are creamy mocha caramel.
Some of us are dark chocolate and some of us are milk chocolate.
Some of us have been sprinkled with cinnamon and
some of us have a touch of nut...
The fact is...You are my cousin and I am yours.
So, embracing that idea, let me just say:
My name is Nancy, from planet Earth,
and I am a lowfat latte freckle...
"We come in all different colors and styles..."
